Project Scientist, Step I-IX

The University of California at Berkeley, School of Public Health-Colford Research Group has an opening for a 100% time Project Scientist position, Step I-IX ($75,200-$142,700), to begin approximately July 1, 2014.

Duties: Work with Principal Investigator in leading multiple field studies in rural Bangladesh in collaboration with the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b). The studies will measure the effects of sanitation interventions on fecal contamination in the household environment (source water, drinking water, soil, hands, food, sentinel objects), and whether measures of environmental contamination are associated with enteric infections in young children.

The Project Scientist will work collaboratively with other team members in the Colford Research Group and team members at icddr,b, and will lead the environmental microbiology components of the study. Specifically, the Project Scientist will be responsible for the overall management of a large field and laboratory team, setting up the sample collection protocols, setting up a rural field laboratory, developing the laboratory assay protocols and QA/QC protocols, overseeing specimen and data collection, analyzing environmental and human health data, and leading peer-reviewed publications based on the research. The position is based in Berkeley, but will require frequent travel to Bangladesh to support field activities.

Basic Qualifications:
• A doctoral degree or equivalent in Epidemiology or a related field by time of application.

Additional Qualifications:
• Undergraduate or graduate training in environmental engineering.
• At least 2 years of experience in the design and management of epidemiologic field studies for primary data collection.
• At least 2 years of experience in the design of environmental microbiology sampling studies in low-income country settings.
• Experience designing and setting up environmental microbiology field laboratories and sampling protocols.
• Experience collecting specimens from water, hands, food, and household objects to be analyzed for fecal indicator bacteria (e.g., E. coli, total coliforms).
• Experience in the analysis of epidemiologic studies using the Stata and/or R programming environments.
• Demonstrated ability to write scientific articles and to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, fast-paced academic research group.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience working in rural Bangladesh.
• Familiarity and experience with modern causal inference theory, including direct and indirect effects analysis.
