Position description

The Department of Theater, Dance & Performance Studies (TDPS) at the University of California, Berkeley is generating an applicant pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach Theater 60: Introduction to Technical Theater & Production, Theater 172: Stage Management, Theater 175: Lighting Design for Theater in TDPS should an opening arise. Appointments may begin in August 2014, and the pool will remain in place for two calendar years; those interested in remaining in the pool for multiple years must reapply.

TDPS offers Introduction to Technical Theater & Production, Stage Management, and Lighting Design for Theater as part of the core undergraduate curriculum. Qualified candidates may be eligible to teach more than one of these courses. Lectures for Introduction to Technical Theater should offer exposure to general theater terminology, organizational structure, theater architecture, scenery, lighting, sound, costuming, props, rigging and general theater safety. Stage Management involves classroom teaching of stage management fundamentals and mentoring of undergraduate stage managers assigned to department theater and dance productions. Lighting Design involves classroom teaching in an A/B course sequence of lighting fundamentals through advanced design using contemporary methods including terminology, computer drafting, programming light boards and moving lights. Knowledge of Vectorworks preferred. Responsibilities for each include classroom teaching for 3 hours per week during scheduled course times, holding 2 office hours per week, grading class assignments, and additional hours of mentorship for departmental productions.

Basic Qualifications: A relevant graduate degree and/or professional experience in Technical Theater Production is required by time of application.

Additional Qualifications: Proficiency in current practices in one or more of the areas of Stage Management, Lighting Design and/or Technical Production including scenery, costume, props and lighting is required.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with teaching in a university setting (especially in the named subject areas) is preferred.

Annual salary rate starting at $47,584, with exact salary determined based on past college- level teaching experience.
