The Mathematical and Physical Sciences Dean’s Office invites applications for a full-time Academic Coordinator to implement a new program, called the California Alliance. The California Alliance is a new program, funded by the National Science Foundation-Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate. It is a collaboration between Berkeley, Caltech, Stanford and UCLA, lead by Berkeley. The California Alliance’s goal is to significantly increase the movement of URM students into the most competitive research and teaching careers in the mathematical, physical, and computer sciences and engineering (MPCS&E) fields. It will systematically address ethnic underrepresentation in the particular science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields (STEM) fields and at the institutions where it is most severe and remains seemingly intractable nationally. The California Alliance defines underrepresented minorities (URM) as African Americans, Chicanos, Latinos, Native Alaskans, Native Pacific Islanders, and American Indians. The AC will be the key administrator responsible for day-to-day program development and implementation for the new California Alliance.

Duties and Responsibilities
As lead institution, Berkeley has the administrative role of coordinating the alliance. The AC will be responsible for working with a cross-institutional team of deans, academic coordinators, institutional researchers, faculty, and staff scientists at the national labs to achieve the outcomes listed below. Some of the California Alliance activities will take place at annual retreat, and the rest at each of the campuses, with coordination to make resources and information available to all the participants, even for those events that take place at the campuses.

1. Create a vibrant cross-institutional intellectual community of URM PhD students, postdocs and faculty in MPCS&E that is allows a seamless advanced science and engineering educational, mentoring and professional development experience across UC Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford and Caltech.

2. Engage & accustom faculty to be mentors and champions to advance URM scientists’ careers.

3. Set new standards for professional development of URM doctoral and post-doctoral scientists that promote their advancement to faculty and postdoctoral ranks in STEM.

4. Produce scholarly findings regarding URM success in STEM and make them available to the scholarly and practitioner communities.

5. With guidance from the Director and PI, staff the California Alliance’s various implementation and advisory teams and boards.

6. Work with California’s nation lab representatives to ensure their engaged participation in the Alliance. Most of the federally funded California national labs and think tanks have agreed to partner with the California Alliance for placement of URM students as postdocs and staff scientists, including Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, Sandia Laboratories, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.

7. Engage other partners as the project develops, such as the professional societies, such as American Chemical Society and others in MPCS&E fields, to promote early student engagement in those organizations as a component of professional development and a mechanism for building professional networks, and to make those organizations’ skill-building, networking, and career services available to our AGEP participants. PPFP has agreed to be a California Alliance partner.

Minimum/Basic Qualifications Required
• Doctoral degree in social science, science, engineering or education by time of application.

Additional Qualifications

• Experience successfully coordinating programmatic components such as those described above.
• Experience and ability to work collaboratively with and inspire a diversity of constituent and stake-holder groups.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Knowledge of and experience with statistical methods, particularly multilevel modeling and structural equation modeling.
• Experience and expertise using new media, particularly social networking, conferencing media, and media for preparing and presenting workshops, including technical skill developing Youtube videos or other on-line presentations.

Initial 2-year appointment starts January 1, 2014. Hiring salary range is $61,176 - $88,800, depending on experience.
