Position description

The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, & Management at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of part-time lecturers to teach courses in Environmental Science and related topics. Screening of applicants begins immediately and will continue as needed. Applicants will be selected from this pool throughout the year. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the Department. Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester (UC Berkeley’s academic calendar can be viewed at http://registrar.berkeley.edu/), and appointments may be renewed based on need, funding, and performance.

We are seeking outstanding lecturers who can teach/co-teach small, medium, or large lecture courses. Potential course topics may include environmental science, environmental policy, ecology, GIS/remote sensing, statistics and data analysis, range management, resource management, climate science, biodiversity, land use as well as courses that examine social, cultural, economic and political aspects of natural resources and the environment. We are currently seeking Lecturers to teach in the subject areas listed below:

• Ecological Data Analysis
• Environmental Health and Development
• Environmental Policy, Administration, & Law
• Environmental Sciences
• Management and Conservation of Rangeland Ecosystems
• Political Ecology
• Resource Ecology
• Resource Sampling
• Resource Management
• Resource Policy
• Society, Environment, and Culture

The need for instructors in subject areas other than those listed above may arise.

General Duties
The primary responsibilities for Lecturer positions include:
• Delivering lectures
• Planning and preparing lessons, including: researching and developing new topics, courses and teaching materials and online resources, developing materials for the student discussion, and developing materials for discussion sections taught by Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs), if applicable
• Supervising GSIs, if applicable
• Holding office hours
• Developing exams and projects, and grading them (or supervising GSIs in the marking)
• Maintaining accurate records and monitoring students' progress, as well as addressing any special student needs
• Maintaining knowledge of, and implementing, college policies

Qualifications
The minimum requirement to be considered as an applicant for this position is the completion of all PhD requirements except the dissertation. The doctoral degree or equivalent in Environmental Sciences or a field appropriate for the needed course is required by the date of hire. Additional qualifications include teaching experience and strong professional references.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience (starting annual, full-time salary is $45,975). Some credit will be given to prior college-level teaching experience (not including graduate student or summer session teaching).

The initial review date for submissions for instructor candidates will be November 25, 2013. This is a non-tenured, temporary position: the appointments to the title of Lecturer are self-terminating (no further notice on non-reappointment will be forthcoming) and do not create an obligation on the part of the University either to extend or renew the appointment outlined above. Any reappointment will be preceded by an assessment. Employment is contingent upon proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
