Position description

C-GEM is repurposing the ribosome, nature’s protein synthesizing machine, to biosynthesize genetically encoded, sequence-defined chemical polymers and natural product-like molecules with unprecedented structures, functions, and activities. C-GEM’s goal is to transform the way scientists design and produce materials and medicines.

A position in the C-GEM PREP program is a one-year research intensive experience - in the lab of Professor Alanna Schepartz - for candidates who want to pursue a PhD in Chemistry or a related discipline.

This position consists of direct research in the C-GEM faculty member’s lab and opportunities for professional development to support participants through the graduate school application process.

Research duties may include but are not limited to:

  • molecular cloning, protein expression and purification
  • synthetic organic chemistry to generate and characterize monomers for ribosomal incorporation
  • in vitro translation and analysis of products via mass spec
  • structural analysis of ribosome complexes via cryo-EM
  • maintain a thorough up-to-date lab notebook and present results internally

Professional development activities may include but are not limited to:

  • participation in workshops related to crafting a graduate school application and the grad school interview process
  • attending and presenting at scientific conferences
  • participation in community science outreach activities or other broader impacts efforts

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) program.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

• Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related discipline, from an accredited college or university. Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.
• Interest in pursuing higher education in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related discipline.

Preferred qualifications
  • Prior research experience
