Position title: Practitioner in Residence
Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. The current base salary range for this position is $67,400 - $173,900. "Off-scale" salaries, which yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Position description

The UC Berkeley Labor Center believes a robust labor movement is critical to building a sustainable, inclusive economy that works for all who live and work in the state. We are pleased to announce the 2023-24 UC Berkeley Labor Center Practitioner in Residence. The residence provides an opportunity for practitioners to carry out research, reflect on their experience, write, and engage on the strategic issues that face worker organizations in the state. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage with graduate or undergraduate students-through lectures, seminars and mentorship. The program is designed for mid-career practitioners who have built experience through their work and are looking for a time to reflect before the next chapter in their career. This position will report directly to the Labor Center Chair.

Position Duties
Practitioners in residence will propose a project with the issue they seek to address and/or ideas they want to explore and the work product they will develop. This may include organizing strategies or plans, papers or articles, policy proposals, training curriculum, or other products.

  • Carrying out analyses on issues related to challenges facing education unions, worker organizations, and workers in California; using experience in the field, research literature, interviews and other research methods to apply towards strategic issues facing the labor movement
  • Developing and advocating for solutions to organizational and policy issues related to education unions, worker organization, labor standards, and the future of work and workers in California
  • Serving as lead author on research reports and/or policy briefs -Proposing, leading and / or participating on policy and planning committees and working groups related to the topic of exploration -Providing technical assistance to stakeholders and policymakers on issues related to labor and worker organizations -Conducting post-implementation analysis and/or developing proposals and recommendations to guide and support strategies or policies
  • Presenting webinars, lectures to students and the Labor Centers’ constituencies.
  • Mentoring and providing guidance to student researchers.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) or 4 years of professional experience
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Associate

  • At least 9 years of professional experience OR
  • Bachelor's degree/ equivalent international degree + at least 5 years of professional experience OR
  • Master's degree/ equivalent international degree + at least 3 years of professional experience

Full

  • At least 14 years of professional experience OR
  • Bachelor’s degree/ equivalent international degree + at least 10 years of professional experience OR
  • Master’s degree/ equivalent international degree + at least 8 years of professional experience OR
  • PhD/ equivalent international degree + at least 2 years of professional experience
Preferred qualifications
  • Bachelor's or equivalent international degree in sociology, economics, industrial relations, geography, public policy, education, or a related field.
  • Ten (10) years experience with education unions, worker organizations, labor related advocacy and non-profit organizations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Thorough written, verbal and interpersonal communications, tact and political acumen to effectively represent the Labor Center.
  • Using analytical and critical thinking skills, including sound judgment and decision-making skills and skills, correctly identify real and potential problems.
  • Strong working knowledge of the labor movement. Strong skills in analyzing, researching and synthesizing research for preparing sound and relevant proposals / analyses.
  • Proficient in project management, including event planning and meeting deadlines. Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Proficient in managing, and mentoring other staff members in managing outreach activities.
