The current base salary range for this position is $57,100–$108,703. "Off-scale" salaries, which yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Position duration: Two year term, with the possibility of renewal

Position description

The University of California, Berkeley Institute of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies seeks applications for an Executive Director (Academic Coordinator I) to support the Armenian Studies Program.

The Armenian Studies Program (ASP) is housed in the UC Berkeley Institute of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ISEEES), an organized research unit under the Vice Chancellor for Research which serves as the focal point for students and faculty who conduct research and teaching on the geographic region of the former Soviet Union; Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe; and the former Ottoman Empire. The emphasis of the Armenian Studies Program is on contemporary Armenia and contemporary issues in the Caucasus; but the program is flexible and may encompass any of several fields, including history, sociology, political science, language, literature, film, and anthropology. It is a multidisciplinary program of moderate complexity, serving multiple constituencies—mainly students—but also faculty and the wider community beyond campus, particularly the Armenian community throughout California.

Reporting to the ISEEES Executive Director, the ASP Executive Director is expected to coordinate the program independently, with advisory assistance from the ISEEES faculty director and executive director. In addition, the incumbent is expected to be substantially involved in budgetary activities, specifically, in the generating of funds for the program and its activities.

Responsibilities:
The ASP Executive Director takes the lead in coordinating the academic and programmatic content of the Armenian Studies Program.
● Develops a comprehensive program of visiting speakers and academic conferences and/or colloquia, seeking input from UC Berkeley faculty working in various fields of Armenian studies, e.g., Armenian language and literature and Armenian history.
● Is responsible for communications and publicity for the program; must be familiar with website management, email mailing lists, and other means of electronic communication and media.
● Advises undergraduate and graduate students in Armenian studies about educational, study abroad, funding, and career opportunities related to Armenia.
● Liaises with the Librarian for Slavic, East European, and Central Asian Studies Collections to monitor acquisitions needs in Armenian studies.
● Involved with fundraising, donor stewardship, and identifying extramural funding opportunities and developing successful funding proposals.
● Spearheads outreach to the local Armenian community, representing the Armenian Studies Program to the community.
● Participates actively in the field, and may be called upon to attend conferences and deliver academic talks at other colleges, universities, or external organizations.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

● Advanced degree or equivalent international degree

Preferred qualifications

● Advanced degree or equivalent international degree in a field relevant to modern or contemporary Armenian studies
● Excellent (preferably native‐level) written and oral communication skills in English
● Near native‐level written and oral communication skills in Armenian
● Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and community groups
● Work experience in a university setting
● Ph.D. or equivalent international degree
● Research experience in Armenian studies
● Excellent organizational and management skills, including event planning, budget reporting, proficiency with Microsoft Office, and familiarity with Adobe Creative products
● Experience in promoting opportunities for groups underrepresented in the field of Armenian studies
● Ability to work collaboratively and build collegial relationships with other UC Berkeley scholars working in the field of Armenian studies
● Experience with website management, social media, Zoom, plus other communications software and technology
● Experience with fundraising, donor stewardship, and grant writing
● Ability to learn UC Berkeley internal systems and operations (e.g., purchasing, budgeting, personnel, administration, travel, organization, etc.)
● Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns
