Position description

Proteomics Manager, Vincent J. Coates Proteomics/Mass Spectrometry Laboratory (P/MSL)

The VJ Coates Proteomics/Mass Spectrometry Laboratory is one of 10 core research facilities operated by the California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences at UC Berkeley (QB3-Berkeley). The facility provides proteomics services to UC researchers, including MudPIT chromatography, location of post-translational modifications, high resolution analysis for label free, isobaric,or isotopic relative quantitation. The Proteomics Manager will oversee these services.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist clients from fields related to molecular biology and biochemistry with experimental design. Provide guidance and feedback to ensure that submitted materials are properly prepared.
  • Provide expertise in proteomics techniques to a wide audience; communicate current experimental techniques in proteomics to researchers via lab meetings, courses, workshops, seminars, etc.
  • Prepare and run samples; supervise technicians to assist with sample preparation and analysis.
  • Management of the facility as a laboratory: equipment maintenance, safety management, purchasing reagents and equipment.

Administrative duties include:

  • Providing direction and oversight of the facility's budget and business model.
  • Developing and maintaining clientele for the facility.
  • Supervising 1-3 technicians.
  • Development, quality assurance, and implementation of facility methodologies. Coordinate with facility staff and staff in other core facilities to optimize services to researchers.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Ph.D. or or equivalent international degree.

Preferred qualifications
  • PhD or equivalent international degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related field
  • Expertise in protein chemistry and proteomics.
  • Expertise in protein and peptide chromatography.
  • Working knowledge of modern techniques in biochemistry and molecular biology.
  • Knowledge of relevant statistical methods.
  • Experience with maintenance and troubleshooting of high-end scientific equipment, preferably mass spectrometers.
  • Ability to manage high end computer equipment and software.
  • Experience supervising scientific staff.
  • Excellent communications skills.
