UC Berkeley Extension, the professional and continuing education division at the University of California, Berkeley, in partnership with the School of Social Welfare, invites applications for a pool of qualified instructors to teach online courses for a newly-developed Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Certificate Program.
UC Berkeley Extension seeks dynamic knowledgeable instructors, with a commitment to the professional development of educators to advance implementation of evidence-based social and emotional learning in schools, to teach one or more masters-level, credit-bearing online courses for in-service teachers and administrators. The pool will remain in place for one calendar year; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond the advertised final closing date must reapply. The number of these positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the department.
Additional Program Information
UC Berkeley intends to launch two online courses to support current California Pre-K-12 educators and leaders to understand and apply Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in their schools and classrooms.
The courses will focus on equipping participants with knowledge about systemic SEL and practical, accessible strategies to promote evidence-based, equitable SEL among students and adult well-being. The courses will survey a spectrum of methods necessary to develop local strategies to make schools centers of social and emotional well-being. The 12 week certificate courses:
SEL Foundations Certificate: for classroom teachers and others who work directly with students in California schools.
- SEL Ambassador Certificate: an advanced course for those charged with leading or supporting systemic SEL implementation and improvement in California schools, districts, or counties.
The UC Berkeley courses are being developed in partnership with the California Department of Health Care Services CalHOPE Student Support initiative, SEL Consulting Collaborative, and a state-wide advisory group of education stakeholders. Instructors will not be required to develop course materials but will collaborate on the delivery.
Courses are offered online. Online instruction is delivered asynchronously through our learning management system (Canvas) across 12 weeks, with 4 live classes held during evenings Pacific Time (over Zoom) per 12-week course. There will be approximately 25-30 students per course section.
Please refer to Preferred Qualifications below for a list of detailed subjects/topics. Instructor duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Complete mandatory training programs by deadlines established by UC Berkeley, including an online orientation to the course content led by course developers.
- Supply reliable equipment necessary for teaching the course (i.e. computer with webcam, mic, speakers, reliable internet) and a private location from which to teach the course.
- Closely review course syllabus and all content, readings, prompts and assignments to facilitate effective instruction.
- Advise and evaluate students on the development and implementation of a three-week SEL Capstone Project in their local learning environment.
- Collaborate with course developers to contribute to an instructor toolkit that includes best practices for online teaching, instructing using principles of andragogy and social and emotional learning, and creating an engaging student experience.
- Based on your professional knowledge, experience as an instructor for the courses, and student feedback, participate in continuous improvement processes with course developers to improve the syllabus, curriculum, and course materials.
- Stay current within the subject, discipline or field of practice.
- Use subject-matter expertise and leverage additional resources appropriately to enhance the curriculum.
- Utilize course support platforms, including BMail (UC Berkeley email), the Canvas Learning Management System and Zoom Pro (as applicable).
- Based on course materials, communicate teaching objectives and specific learning outcomes to students, and clearly outline/explain the grading policies for the course.
- Respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner.
- Employ culturally competent and inclusive teaching methodologies in the classroom (including teaching non-native speakers and/or students with academic letters of accommodations for disabilities).
- Evaluate student achievement of specific learning outcomes and assign grades.
- Post final student grades to the transcript system within two weeks of course completion and complete other required administrative tasks in a timely manner.
- Handle student inquiries about final grades and consult with the Program Director/Manager as needed.
- Retain student records according to program guidance and University policies.

- Advanced Degree
- All work must be performed in the United States, whether in person or online. For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. Due to the part-time, temporary nature of instructor positions, UC Berkeley Extension is unable to provide US visa/work permits for this position.
Successful candidates will possess and/or demonstrate the following preferred qualifications:
- Advanced Degree (Masters or Doctorate) in Education, Social and Emotional Learning, Child or Human Development, Educational or Developmental Psychology, Educational Leadership, School Counseling, Social Work or other relevant field.
- 3 or more years of experience implementing social and emotional learning in a classroom with PreK-12 students or leading social and emotional learning initiatives in U.S. public schools.
- 5 or more years of experience teaching at a U.S. PreK-12 school/college/university institution and/or comparable experience delivering relevant professional learning to educators and administrators.
- Possess knowledge of the K-12 education system in the United States, and preferably, California, including widely implemented education frameworks such as MTSS and School Climate and Culture, and awareness of systemic inequities and discrimination in education.
Subject matter expertise in Social and Emotional Learning and its connected disciplines and practices, with the ability to teach the following topics, including but not limited to:
- The core goals, outcomes, and components of systemic social and emotional learning, including classroom and school-wide SEL planning, implementation, and continuous improvement processes and SEL’s role in promoting educational equity.
- Developmentally appropriate student SEL skill development strategies including direct instruction, academic integration, and classroom pedagogy informed by evidence-based SEL curricula/programs and research-based practices.
- Adult SEL practices that strengthen SEL competencies and well-being.
- Inclusive relationship-centered classroom and school-wide strategies, leveraging positive childhood experiences, attachment, and developmental relationships theory.
- Culturally and linguistically affirming, trauma-informed classroom and family partnership practices.
Other Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience and/or comfort with video and audio recording, including voice overs for short weekly instructional videos.
- Experience teaching or delivering educator and administrator professional development online.
- Effective verbal/written communication and presentation skills (English).
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues and work within a team environment.
- Proficiency in (or willingness to learn) instructional and other technology, such as: Learning Management Systems (Canvas); lecture/presentation capture applications (Camtasia or Panopto); online video conferencing (Zoom); Microsoft Office (Word and PowerPoint); file sharing (Google drive or Dropbox); and Google tools (email, calendar, docs, sheets, slides, etc).
