Position description

The University of California, Berkeley is seeking to hire a postdoctoral scholar to support its growing area of research on non-CO2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emission mitigation in China, with a focus on methane, under the direction of Dr. Jiang Lin (at the Department of Agricultural and Resources Economics). We have worked closely with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Energy Analysis and Environmental Impact Division and collaborators in China on conducting cost-effective analysis and modeling to understand the potential growth in non-CO2 GHGs and climate super pollutants over the past five years. Earlier phases of our work have identified a 47% cost-effective mitigation potential in China’s non-CO2 GHG emissions by 2050, and key findings were communicated to key policymakers and think-tanks.
The current initiative seeks to 1) conduct deeper techno-economic analysis of methane (and other non-CO2 GHG) mitigation measures and evaluate their cost-effectiveness under China-specific context, 2) develop a deep mitigation and policy constraints scenario to understand the potential and benefits for additional reductions beyond current mitigation measures, and 3) develop a roadmap in reducing methane emissions in China before 2030.
Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the supervisor, this position will conduct research and use quantitative methodologies to analyze cost-effectiveness of mitigation measures and policies for climate super pollutant emissions (including specifically methane, F-gases, and black carbon) in various sectors and relevant mitigation measures. This position will help conduct literature review and data collection to support the development of modeling parameters and inputs for emission mitigation scenarios, conduct cost-effectiveness and marginal cost of abatement analysis, and prepare scientific reports and conduct related technology and policy research.
