Position description

The School of Social Welfare welcomes applicants for a new faculty position either at the tenure-track level (Assistant Professor) or tenured level (Associate) who is an expert on homelessness, housing, and the effect homelessness has on families and social services.

We are particularly interested in candidates who have:

  • An established or promising track record of research with substantial impact in the area of homelessness and social services;
  • A sophisticated understanding of the structural determinants of homelessness, which may include psychiatric illness, incarceration, systemic racism, climate crises, etc.;
  • Direct practice experience working with the unhoused;
  • Evidence of engagement with policies and services affecting homeless families and children;
  • Capacity for interdisciplinary research and teaching linked to the School of Social Welfare’s specializations. Additional connections to externally allied fields are also desirable (e.g., public policy, public health, social sector management, data science);
  • Leadership skills essential for mentoring students and engaging community leaders;
  • Interest in and capacity for collaboration with existing campus initiatives regarding addressing Bay Area homelessness and training MSW students for work in this field;
  • A commitment to equity and inclusion that informs both teaching and research; and
  • An established or promising track record of collegial teamwork and university citizenship needed for a range of leadership roles in a public institution.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Applicants must have a PhD (or equivalent international degree) or be enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) granting program at the time of application.

Preferred qualifications

Preference is for a candidate who holds or will hold a PhD or equivalent international degree, or achieved a PhD or equivalent international degree in Social Work/Welfare or related field by the start date of employment.
Also preferred is an active research agenda, an established or promising record of substantial scholarly impact in their areas of interest, the ability to teach core courses in the School’s curriculum, and general expertise in the fields of social work and social welfare. The preferred candidate will also show evidence or promise of high impact, funded scholarship, with an emphasis on issues relevant to homelessness and housing.
Also strongly preferred is a MSW degree with at least two years post-MSW experience.

Assistant Professor (new/recent PhDs)

Position title: Assistant Professor, Homelessness and Housing

Individuals should submit their application at this level if they meet one of the following conditions: Current or recent PhD candidate or graduate; current or recent postdoc; current assistant professor (including those who are “senior” assistant professors near tenure). Associate Professor (Applicants who currently hold, or have held, a tenure-track faculty position)

Position title: Associate Professor for Homelessness and Housing
