Position description

The Lawrence Hall of Science is The University of California, Berkeley’s public science center. Our mission is to inspire and engage through science discovery and learning in ways that advance equity and opportunity. The Lawrence seeks applications for Executive Leader (Academic Administrator V) for our Learning Group. This position leads, manages and provides technical direction for multiple, large, highly complex, and very visible academic and research programs with multiple centers or locations. This position is expected to be on-site multiple times a week.

The Learning Group houses initiatives, programs, and partnerships related to STEM learning design, research, development, implementation, dissemination, and scaling. The Learning Group’s work is situated within and across multiple and diverse learning settings (informal, after school, summer, public/charter/private school, outdoors, etc.) related to our areas of expertise and impact. All Lawrence Hall of Science initiatives are aligned with The Lawrence’s strategic commitments (inspiring tomorrow, equity, and science) and priorities (global issues, social justice, impact, financial health, organizational well-being, and partnerships).

As one of the Lawrence Hall of Science's Executive Leaders, the person in this position must provide both visionary leadership and effective management for the Lawrence Hall of Science's extensive portfolio of educational programs, partnerships and new initiatives. This position oversees the portfolio summarized above through subordinate academic and non-academic managers in the Learning Group; has significant responsibility to establish and achieve broadly stated goals; determines objectives, directs programs, develops strategies and policies, manages resources ( human, financial, and physical) allocated to the Learning Group division and functions with a high degree of autonomy; proactively assesses risk to establish systems and procedures to protect organizational assets; and determines strategies for programs with organization-wide impact.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent international degree

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent international degree plus 15 years of experience
Or
Masters or equivalent international degree plus 10 years of experience
Or
PhD or equivalent international degree plus 5 years of experience

Preferred qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to design, develop, implement, and scale innovative products, programs, services, and/or research agendas with a focus on equity and social justice.
• Portfolio of academic and professional accomplishments (e.g. publications, presentations, products, programs) in their area of specialization
• Recognized expertise and significant experience as a visionary and effective educational leader.
• Ability to manage collaborations between academia, community, corporate and/ or governmental agencies.
• Expert ability to work with a dynamic and diverse group of faculty, staff, students, community members, and partners.
• Demonstrated expertise with program building within a leading academic institution including related skills (e.g. administrative, budgetary, human resources, and financial principles and practices).
• Minimum of five years of design, development, and/or design-based research experience.
• Minimum of five years of management experience of complex programs and/or organizations.
• Expert oral and written communication skills with broad and diverse researchers, scientists, corporate partners, community leaders, program managers, funding agencies, youth, media, and center managers.
• Management, administrative, and supervisory experience in academic, educational and/or government agencies.
• Significant experience in fundraising and business development
