Anticipated start: Fall 2022
Position duration: Initial appointment is for 1 year with possibility of renewal based on performance and availability of funding.

Position description

The Department of Environmental Science Policy and Management at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Employee in the Getz Lab, in the area of Computational Ecology.

The candidate will carry out management and analyses of data obtained from current disease and movement ecology projects funded by NSF. Write code for simulation models. Produce figures and tables reporting results. Write up drafts of scientific papers in the role of “first author” reporting the results of collaborative studies.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

PhD (or equivalent international degree) required by the appointment start date.
The candidate should have no more than four years of post-degree research experience by start date.

Preferred qualifications
  • strong mathematical, statistical and computer coding skills

  • Experience with R is essential.

  • Familiarity with Java and some background in movement or disease ecology is highly desirable.

  • The successful applicant should be highly motivated and creative, able to work both independently and as a part of a team.

  • The successful candidate must have demonstrated written and verbal English communication skills.

  • At least one first authored publication in a peer reviewed journal in one of the following fields: applied mathematics, mathematical population biology, computational population biology, mathematical/statistical/computational modeling.

  • Must have several years of experience in using the R software platform with regard to data manipulation, statistical modeling and data analysis.

  • Experience in building simulation models, a knowledge of JAVA, and writing papers using LaTeX (e.g., on Overleaf) would be an advantage.
