The New Business Community Law Clinic (NBCLC) seeks applications for a Clinic Supervising Staff Attorney.
Under the supervision of the Clinic Director, the Supervising Attorney’s general responsibilities include mentoring law students in transactional law practice, co-teaching the NBCLC companion seminar overseeing legal matters and advice provided to clients in English and Spanish; managing legal cases or projects independently (i.e., without a co-supervisor); assisting in Clinic-sponsored research projects, and performing varied administrative and other tasks to assist in NBCLC’s operation.
New businesses will provide most of the economy’s new job growth in the coming years. But the legal and economic gauntlet that start-ups face will eliminate most before they reach their second year. Few start-ups can afford the legal consultation to help them start smart and steer clear of pitfalls. Despite the abundant drive of the Bay Area’s entrepreneurs, many viable and promising businesses are choked off before they can take their essential place in the local economy. Affordable legal consultation for Bay Area entrepreneurs is critically needed to help release this potential. Law School Graduates can help fill this need, but only if they are well-prepared with a rigorous program of classroom preparation and hands on experience. While a majority of law students will be advising businesses post-graduation, traditional law school curriculum is addressed primarily to the needs of litigators and scholars.
NBCLC is a clinical course which has developed since 2007. Each term approximately 16 Berkeley Law students participate. The course uses a variety of teaching methods, including lecture, simulations, case conferences, small-size team meetings, workshops/panels, and field trips to local businesses. The clinic also uniquely involves Berkeley Law alumni in teaching and simulations that help prepare students for practice.
The New Business Community Law Clinic is committed to building an equitable and inclusive team to teach and work in a multicultural learning environment. The law school provides support for Supervising Attorneys to attend conferences that advance their professional development goals and interests. NBCLC additionally supports other activities that individual staff identify as relevant to their professional satisfaction and growth.
Under the supervision of the Clinic Director, the Supervising Attorney will be responsible for:
Clinical Supervision and Advocacy (80%)
• Training and supervising clinic students as they assist clients in English and Spanish
• Developing and managing clinic cases and projects, and co-supervising NBCLC office hours
• Responding to requests for legal assistance from clients in English and Spanish
• Attending and assisting in the design and teaching of the weekly clinic seminar
• Attending weekly NBCLC team meetings and monthly clinical program meetings
• Recruiting clinic students through events and other outreach
• Developing and maintaining clinic relationships with clients, partner organizations, and other stakeholders
• Traveling to offsite meetings as needed to work on clinic matters (often with students)
• Managing the clinic docket during summers
• Providing Spanish interpretation and translation as needed
Administrative Duties (10%)
• Assisting with clinic administrative functions, including maintaining the Clio case management system and Practice Resource Library
• Organizing programmatic events, such as community-based legal trainings in English and Spanish
• Presenting on legal issues relevant to small businesses in English and Spanish
• Speaking at public events, and otherwise participating in professional networking, training, and development activities
• Promoting the clinic to students and other constituencies
• Engaging in media relations and development activities
Other Duties as Assigned (10%)
• Working with the NBCLC Legal Fellow or other staff in outreach efforts to Spanish-speaking communities
• Assisting in the development of research studies designed to understand the challenges for immigrant entrepreneurs in starting businesses, particularly for those whose first language is not English
• Other duties as needed
UC Field Work Supervisors are academic appointees in an organized bargaining unit and are exclusively represented by American Federation of Teachers - Unit 18.

• Candidates must hold a J.D. degree, or equivalent international degree, at the time of application
• Admission to practice law in California
• At least three (3) years of post-graduate experience in law practice
• Native Spanish speaking and writing skills (Mexican dialect preferred, consistent with NBCLC client population)
• Experience in assisting small business clients with legal issues, particularly Spanish speakers
• Excellent research, writing, and oral advocacy skills
• Demonstrated analytical, organizational, and planning skills
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Career intention to practice in public interest, public sector, and/or clinical setting
• Excellent analytical, communication, organizational, and planning skills
• Willingness to work on NBCLC’s full range of cases and projects
• Experience in clinical teaching or as a clinical law student
• Experience working with diverse communities, clients and other stakeholders
• Ability to manage cases and projects and supervise students independently
