The Department of Music at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach a range of courses in the area of musicology.
These courses include, but are not limited to courses in the Music 128 sequence. These courses serve students who are not music majors, although music majors are allowed to register for a more advanced section in certain 128 courses. In recent years the Department has offered Music 128 courses on opera, the music of Beethoven, music and the environment, the American musical, love and love songs in the Middle Ages, the history of jazz, and the history of music technology. We are interested in courses on both canonical and non-canonical topics; the only constraints are that course topics should have a fairly broad appeal and be based in material that is accessible to students with no background in music theory.
In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and interacting with students outside of class time via email and/or bCourses. Some courses may require supervision of discussion sections taught by graduate students.
The Department seeks candidates whose teaching, performance and service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion and to increasing the participation of individuals from groups historically underrepresented in higher education.
