Position description

The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Krasileva Lab in the area of wheat genomics.
The Krasileva Lab studies fundamental principles of plant immunity, genome evolution and plant-pathogen interactions. The postdoc will closely work with the PI and other lab members.
The postdoc will facilitate the cloning and characterization of an invaluable set of enhanced disease resistance mutants (EDR) to yellow rust, caused by the obligate biotroph fungus, Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici. The lines were created by EMS mutagenesis of the tetraploid wheat line ‘Kronos’, these lines were previously sequenced and confer enhanced resistance. Major ongoing goals of the project are to identify the genes responsible for resistance and harness them to protect wheat crops by modulating their expression with synthetic biology.
This position involves laboratory work on a daily basis with additional seasonal field work. Some aspects of the project include bioinformatic analyses.

The employee will perform studies in the laboratory to examine enhanced disease resistance mutants of wheat with the goal to understand and modulate the molecular and cellular mechanisms of plant immunity.

Specific duties of the position will include:

  • Establishing a research project within the remit of the lab's research direction and funding sources
  • Implementation of experiments, including laboratory and bioinformatics techniques to understand enhanced disease resistance in wheat
  • Data analyses and recording using version controlled electronic software.
  • Participate in and present results at lab meetings and in regularly scheduled discussions with the PI
  • Prepare figures and write full first drafts of the manuscripts
  • Mentor undergraduate and rotation students

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

• PhD (or equivalent international degree) required by the appointment start date.
• The candidate may have no more than four years of post-degree research experience by start date

Preferred qualifications

• Demonstrated record of scientific accomplishment as documented by publications and presentations.
• Experience with all standard molecular biology techniques including molecular cloning and library preparation for NGS technologies
• Experience acquiring, analyzing, and integrating large genomic datasets to understand processes associated with plant disease resistance or another trait; and or
• Experience with cell biology-based approaches to characterize processes involved in fungal pathogenesis and plant disease resistance; and/or
• Bioinformatic skills related to genome assembly and annotation, especially using long-read technologies
• Experience with promoter analysis and gene expression
• Experience with genetics including map-based, BSA and or MBS in wheat or related polyploid species
• Experience with cereal fungal pathogens
• Experience with genome-editing
