Position description

The Environmental Design Archives (EDA) seeks a dynamic collaborative Archivist and scholar who will enhance and maintain the ED Archives’ position as a leader in the field of design records while supporting the educational mission of the College of Environmental Design and engaging fully with faculty and students within the College of Environmental Design as well as the wider UC Community.

The Environment

The Environmental Design Archives is a non-profit, largely self-supporting research unit of the College of Environmental Design that reports to the Dean of the College. It is the most extensive source of written and visual information on the development of Bay Area and Northern California architecture and landscape architecture. To support the educational mission of the University, the Environmental Design Archives is committed to raising awareness of the significant design heritage of Northern California through collecting, preserving, and providing access to the primary records of the built and landscaped environment of the region. The Archives offers access to primary resources in all formats and robust services to connect users with those resources and build their related research skills.

The work of many San Francisco Bay region's historically significant architects, landscape architects, planners, and designers are represented in collections of more than 200 individuals and firms. These collections contain drawings, plans, specifications, photographs, audio-tapes, personal papers, business records, furniture, art, models, and artifacts.

The Head Archivist directs a full archival program including collection development/acquisitions, donor relations, research services, training and instruction, outreach, fundraising, grant writing, publications, exhibitions, website, and access, as well as managing budgets, strategic planning, personnel, and archival activities.

Responsibilities

This position reports to the Office of the Dean, College of Environmental Design

This position leads and coordinates an active program of collection management and development; directs all public relations, outreach, research services, online access, and programming; and plays an active role in the financial stability of the Archives.

This position will:

Ensure that the ED Archives continues to acquire high-quality collections through donor relations, subject knowledge, and networking as well as working closely with faculty to coordinate collection development.

Be responsible for working closely with other administrative departments within the College of Environmental Design to manage all financial aspects including budgeting, fundraising and financing; donor relations, annual appeals, and special projects.

Collaborate with faculty on matters such as assisting with developing course material, instruction events, and responding to faculty research interests; develop and implement archival instruction for relevant courses across all disciplines and at all levels. Support faculty teaching of graduate and undergraduate seminars.

Direct collection management, archival processing and the digitization program. This includes preservation, appraisal, arrangement, description, cataloging, and access; reviewing procedures and priorities for appraisal, preservation and processing.

Ensure all collections and digital materials are accessible through the Online Archive of California, Calisphere, the EDA website, and related sources.

Manage the EDA facilities both on campus and at the Regatta Building (offsite collection storage and processing space) to meet collection, staff, and user needs, and facilitate access to and preservation of the collections.

Direct all aspects of Research Services and Outreach including reference, public relations, online access, event programming, the EDA website, exhibitions, online exhibitions, external support groups, and the publication program.

Manage all grants from preparation to closure including serving as the Principal Investigator.

Supervise Librarians, Library Assistants, digitization technicians, and student employees. Will review and initiate merit/promotion cases for the EDA Libarians and present the case to the Dean for review.

To be an effective colleague and a manager, this position will be a fair, progressive leader to EDA staff; lead in creating and communicating policies; manage personnel matters; contribute to college-wide programs; encourage ongoing staff development; and foster an environment of collaboration, creative thinking, and continuous improvement.

Participate actively in archives, special collections, library and historical professional organizations to ensure that the EDA remains aware of current developments in research and instruction for archives, adopts and contributes to the development of relevant standards, and is apprised of trends in historical scholarship.

Appointees to the librarian series at UC shall have professional backgrounds that demonstrate a high degree of creativity, teamwork, and flexibility. UCB librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, to be able to work comfortably in a shared decision-making environment, and to be active professionally. Advancement in the Librarian series is based in part on professional contributions beyond the primary assignment; the successful candidate will show evidence or promise of such contributions to the Library, campus, UC System, and profession.

Professional librarians at UC are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council - American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). They are entitled to appropriate professional leave, two days per month of vacation leave, one day per month of sick leave, and all other benefits granted to non-faculty academic personnel. ● Minimum of 3 -5 years of experience

Preferred qualifications

● Advanced degree from an ALA-accredited institution with an archival concentration or in
an appropriate subject discipline with relevant special collection or archival training or experience.
● Advanced subject knowledge of architecture, landscape architecture, historic preservation, or Bay Area design history
● Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to special collections and archives research services, including a keen interest in promoting the research use and appreciation of rare and primary source materials, a commitment to planning, implementing, and assessing user-centered services, and understanding the user experience to improve the discovery process of collections
● Knowledge of collection development, archival processing, database management, technical and research services, and public outreach including but not limited to exhibitions, websites, events, and publications
● Demonstrated knowledge emerging technologies including born-digital design records, digitization activities and technology; and experience with outcomes and assessment of and archives services
● Demonstrate successful fundraising experience, including donor development and relations; writing appeals and running crowdfunding campaigns; and managing grants from preparation to completion including budgets
