Position description

Professor Chunlei Liu's research lab in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley welcomes applicants for an Assistant Project Scientist in remote cell stimulation using radio frequency (RF) magnetic fields. The lab's main research interest is developing engineering approaches to study the brain. The current focuses are in three areas: 1) developing non-invasive MRI techniques for visualizing human brain structure and function, 2) developing non-invasive remote cell modulation techniques to modulate neuronal activity and 3) applications to the understanding and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

Duties of the position include but are not limited to:

  1. Design and conduct experiments to test the efficacy and applications of RF stimulation in a variety of cell types and under various in vitro and in vivo conditions;
  2. Design and conduct experiments to investigate the mechanisms of the stimulation;
  3. Design and conduct experiments to improve the biological and hardware systems;
  4. Conduct collaborative research with collaborators;
  5. Data analysis and manuscript and proposal preparation;
  6. Conduct research presentations;
  7. Train and mentor new trainees.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD or equivalent international degree or enrolled in a PhD degree program (or equivalent international degree) at the time of application.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

PhD or equivalent international degree by the start date.

Preferred qualifications
  1. PhD or equivalent in neuroscience, neurobiology, bioengineering or related field.
  2. Strong publication record;
  3. Experienced in general biological wet lab experimental techniques;
  4. Experienced in DNA cloning;
  5. Experienced in DNA transfection;
  6. Experienced in fluorescence imaging;
  7. Experience with electrophysiology;
  8. Highly motivated and willing to learn;
  9. Ability to handle fluctuating priorities and deadlines related to research project;
  10. Must be organized, responsible, and punctual, with ability to pay close attention to details;
  11. Must be able to collaborate well with others in a team;
  12. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
