Position description

The Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute (HWNI) at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a Junior/Assistant Specialist position

The position will organize and maintain the intracranial (iEEG) database, including compiling data from/for Dr. Robert Knight's Lab, UCSF Neurological Surgery Department, Children's Hospital, California Pacific Medical Center, UC Irvine, UCSD, Loma Linda Medical Center, UC Davis and the University of Oslo. This position will also provide hands-on support and analysis for scalp EEG and iEEG projects, which will include administering EEGs, data pre-processing, event extraction, time-frequency analysis, event related potential analysis, phase-locking analysis and network coherence analysis. The position will oversee and create 3D and 2D visual reconstructions of patients' data and medical scans to aid in the development of Lab Researchers’ articles and presentations. Relatedly, this position will help maintain the lab’s analysis pipelines and codebase. The position also requires occasional overnight travel to some of the recording sites. In parallel to this iEEG work, which includes administering EEGs and assistance with recording iEEG, this position will assume responsibility for neurological patient cohort (stroke and tumor resection). This includes adding precise neuroanatomical lesion location for each patient to our database; also working on our various CPHS protocols.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Bachelor degree or equivalent international degree, or enrolled in Bachelor's or equivalent international degree program.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Bachelor's degree or equivalent international degree.

Minimum of 6 months of research experience.

Preferred qualifications

Demonstrated coursework in Neuroscience, Cognitive Science, and/or Computer Science.

General programming or software development experience.

Understanding of Electroencephalography (EEG) and/or intracranial EEG (iEEG) research.

Experience administering EEGs.

Possess skill set with patient MRIs including an understanding of MRI neuroanatomy.

Established with scientific programming, such as Python/MATLAB/R and related data analysis toolboxes.

Understanding of software version control systems such as Git and Mercurial.

Familiarity with command line scripting and Linux and Windows operating systems.

Knowledgeable about issues with computer software and hardware, and experience troubleshooting.
