The Institute of Business and Social Impact (IBSI) with the HAAS School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Director of Research (Researcher - Title Code 3200) position, in the area of Economics.
The Institute for Business and Social Impact (IBSI) at the Haas School of Business was founded in November 2013 to train and empower leaders to address society’s most pressing challenges. IBSI builds upon the School’s unique and historic commitment to comprehensive excellence in research and public education to improve the world. Using the role of business to build and maintain a more equitable, sustainable, and inclusive society, IBSI cultivates world-class courses, faculty research, experiential learning, and external partnerships.
Core to the Institute are eight well-established centers and programs:
• The Center for Responsible Business
• The Center for Gender, Equity and Leadership
• The Gilbert Center for Health Economics (affiliate)
• Berkeley Business Academy for Youth
• The Sustainable and Impact Finance Initiative
• The Blockchain at Berkeley Haas Initiative
• The Fintech and Financial Inclusion Initiative
Core functions of the Director of Research include:
Strategic Research Projects (50%). The Director of Research will engage in research projects of strategic importance to IBSI. S/he will:
• Serve as principal investigator on select Institute grants, including leading proposal development and providing intellectual leadership and oversight for funded activities;
• Work closely with Berkeley Haas and UC Berkeley faculty on interdisciplinary research projects and case studies in the fields studied through IBSI Centers and Initiatives (sustainability, DEI, human rights fintech, and financial inclusion, etc). Work includes designing studies, overseeing field data collection, developing statistical models, conducting analyses, and publish findings;
• Work with external experts, postdoctoral scholars, and others as needed to integrate best practices for research transparency, costing, long-term impact evaluation, and other approaches into IBSI programming;
• Manage visiting scholars who come to UC Berkeley via research initiatives;
• Maintain an independent research portfolio in one or multiple IBSI research areas.
Advance IBSIs Research and Capacity Building Agenda (40%). The Director of Research is responsible for articulating and advancing strategic research and capacity-building agenda for IBSI. S/he will:
• Cultivate strong networks of donors, partners, and end-users that support IBSI’s mission and vision;
• Track research, program, and policy trends and source ideas for new research and capacity building opportunities from Berkeley Haas and UC Berkeley faculty, collaborators, staff, and partners;
• Identify high-yield funding opportunities that advance IBSI’s research agenda, including those that bolster existing research portfolios or launch new portfolios;
• Draft concept notes and generates buy-in for multi-investigator research and capacity building programs;
• Work with the Faculty Director, Executive Director and program teams to respond to relevant calls for proposals;
• Contribute to high-level decision-making at IBSI by regularly engaging with the Faculty Director, Executive Director, Center Executive Directors, and Initiative Program Directors.
Policy Engagement and Dissemination (10%). The Director of Research will liaise with policymakers, foundations, journalists, policy-makers, and program implementers to ensure that key research findings are effectively communicated and put into practice. S/he will:
• Identify novel opportunities for research translation and dissemination that strategically introduce evidence-based recommendations into ongoing policy dialogues;
• Foster linkages between researchers and their counterparts in government and the private sector;
• Author blogs, position papers, and journal articles that raise visibility for IBSI and share new knowledge for broad adoption;
• Present on new research at major relevant conferences and events;
• Leverage networks of donors, partners, and end-users to source ideas for policy engagement and identify potential scale-up projects;
• Work with postdocs and program managers to develop and review policy reports, briefings, and syntheses for policymakers.
Professional Researchers are exclusively represented by the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace, and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) local (5810).
• Ph.D. or equivalent international degree completed at time of application.
• Ph.D. in economics, public policy, political science
• Knowledge of relevant technical skills (econometrics, impact evaluation methods, etc.)
• Demonstrated experience in research, focused on development economics
• Written and verbal communication skills, allowing for effective communication with internal and external staff and partners at all organizational levels
• Experience and competency with statistical software packages such as STATA, SAS, R, and ability to render accurate statistical analysis
• Experience and demonstrated success with technical grant writing;
• Experience and competency working with decision-makers in multilateral, government, and/or large research institutions
• Practical knowledge of aligning diverse faculty research interests with the needs of policy-makers and donors
• Demonstrated networking skills (brings network, presents well to stakeholders)
• Experience working with research center or institute (has organizational insight understands IBSI’s vision and has good intuition about how we can succeed)
