Position description

The Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Project Scientist in the Stahl Lab, in the area of brown fat and ubiquinone biology, at 100% time with an expected start in the Summer of 2021.

The overarching goal of the Stahl laboratory is to advance human health by re-engineering lipid fluxes in the context of obesity-related disorders to protect certain tissues, such as the liver, from detrimental effects of ectopic lipid deposition and to generate metabolically highly active tissues that can serve as a save destination for excess fatty acids.

Using both in vitro (cell culture) and in vivo (mouse models) approaches the Assistant Project Scientist will design, perform, and analyze experiments to determine the role of CoQ in mitochondrial function, thermogenesis, and brown fat function. Experiments will range from the isolation and characterization of mitochondrial and cellular respiration rates, to biochemical analysis of CoQ and lipid contents, to the investigation of cellular stress responses, to the creation and maintenance of transgenic animal lines, to whole body physiology with a focus on metabolic rates, thermogenesis, endocrine function, and organismal metabolic homeostasis. The Assistant Project Scientist will be expected to lead publication of results in peer reviewed journals and to contribute to the overall oversight of the Stahl lab.

Basic Qualifications (At the time of application)
-PhD, MD or equivalent international degree

Preferred Qualifications (By start date)
-Postdoctoral experience in the fields relevant to the responsibilities and ubiquinone biology
-Demonstrated experience in:
• Cell culture
• Maintenance of animal colonies
• Gene and protein expression analysis
• HPLC based analysis of lipid contents
• Molecular and cellular biology techniques particularly as they relate to the mitochondrial and integrated stress response
• Respiration assays (mitochondrial, cellular, whole body)
• Assessment of adipocyte function
