The Department of Theater, Dance and Performance Studies (TDPS) at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for qualified temporary instructors to teach courses in Lighting Design for Theater; Sound Design for Theater; and Video and Projection Design for Theater and Media. We welcome experienced educators and designers who have a broad range of lighting design skills that are specifically related to theater and dance making.
The Department seeks candidates who are interested in designing at least one production per semester. It is expected that instructors will reside in the Bay Area during the term of employment. For Lighting and Sound Design lecturers employment would start Fall 2021 (Fall semester begins August 18th, 2021) and go into the Spring 2022 semester (Spring semester ends May 13th, 2022). Employment for the Video Design lecturer would start Spring 2022 (Spring semester begins January 11th, 2022). These positions are for a minimum of one course per semester, at 33% time, with the potential of up to two courses per semester for a combined 67% time.
Due to COVID 19 UC Berkeley has begun the Spring 21 semester with fully remote instruction. UC Berkeley is prepared to implement hybrid and/or flexible modes of instruction as soon as public health conditions allow. Remote instruction may be synchronous, asynchronous, or a combination of both. Instructors must have internet access and be prepared to adjust pedagogical approaches with a remote setting and use new teaching tools.
Basic Qualifications (by time of application): Bachelor's degree (or international equivalent degree).
Additional Qualifications (by start date): At least 1 year of experience teaching at college or high school level.
- Specialization in Lighting Design (by start date): 5-7 years of professional experience working in the theater in lighting design. Proven experience with ETC and Strand products, as well as lighting design software, such as VectorWorks, AutoCad and Lightwright. Experience teaching classes to students who have various levels of lighting design skills and ability; experience and interest in community engagement; experience mentoring and advising students; experience working in collaboration with other faculty members (specifically theater design faculty and staff, as well as technical director and production manager). Finally, the applicant should contribute to the overall curriculum; and have an understanding of the larger intellectual context of performance studies. An MFA or other terminal degree in lighting design is preferred, but not required.
- Specialization in Sound Design (by start date): 5-7 years of professional experience working in the theater in sound design. Proven experience with sound design software and hardware. Experience teaching classes to students who have various levels of sound design skills and ability; experience and interest in community engagement; experience mentoring and advising students; experience working in collaboration with other faculty members (specifically theater design faculty and staff, as well as technical director and production manager). Finally, the applicant should contribute to the overall curriculum; and have an understanding of the larger intellectual context of performance studies. An MFA or other terminal degree in sound design is preferred but not required.
- Specialization in Video Design/Production (by start date): 5-7 years of professional experience working in video design for theater and mixed media. Proven experience with video design and editing software. Experience teaching classes to students who have various levels of video design and editing skills and ability; experience and interest in community engagement; experience mentoring and advising students; experience working in collaboration with other faculty members (specifically theater design faculty and staff, as well as technical director and production manager). Finally, the applicant should contribute to the overall curriculum; and have an understanding of the larger intellectual context of performance studies. An MFA or other terminal degree in sound design is preferred but not required.
Salary Range: Commensurate with college teaching experience, in accordance with the current Unit-18 lecturer salary scale and its provisions. Minimum starting annual full-time (100%) salary rate is based on an academic year salary of $56,381.
UC Lecturers are academic appointees in an organized bargaining unit and are exclusively represented by American Federation of Teachers - Unit 18.
The Department of Theater, Dance & Performance Studies is part of the Division of Arts and Humanities in the College of Letters and Science. Its programs integrate undergraduate and graduate instruction with student participation in theater, dance, and performance studies. Students are enrolled per semester in courses that engage in participation in productions as actors, dancers, builders, stage crew, stage managers, directors, choreographers, or designers. The department has an active performance season and offers upper division courses in theatrical design and technical theater.

Lighting Design for Performance — Fall Semester
This course will introduce students to the tools, terms, and techniques of stage lighting through lectures and practical application. Working as part of a production crew (an additional 45 hours outside of class) will demonstrate the practice of stage lighting. Class lectures and workshops augment the production experience. They will cover descriptions, explanations, and demonstrations of lighting concepts and equipment, and the initial elements of design.
Lighting Design for Performance — Spring Semester
This is the second of two classes in stage lighting design and execution. In this course, students will study the design and execution of stage lighting from the visualization of the initial concept through the realization of that concept on stage. The course is divided into four segments: Review foundational information about stage lighting. Analyze performance material and present a proposal for a production. Design a repertory light plot by drafting the plot with VectorWorks Spotlight, a CAD program for stage lighting. Finally, work with a light plot in the Playhouse, creating light cues for music of student’s choice.
Sound Design for Performance
In this course, undergraduate students will learn to construct sound cues and soundtracks for theater performances and videos using industry standard software, and will learn fundamental principles of incorporating video and sound into stage productions. Students will be exposed to the writings and works of prominent sound theorists, designers, and engineers and multimedia performance artists. The most successful students may be invited to participate in UC Berkeley theater productions as sound designers.
Video Production for Performance
Video Production for Performance is a workshop class in which students explore a broad range of video applications to performance. Through a series of exercise video shoots students learn the fundamentals of video production, including basic optics, camera angles and movement, sound recording, and editing. With an additional emphasis on concept and planning, students prepare for and execute a sustained video project, a detailed documentation of a staged performance, the development of a video component for a production, a documentary study of aspects of performance, or the generation of a freestanding video program.
