Position description

The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is a multidisciplinary research institution focused on genome engineering and potential applications in agriculture, microbiology and biomedicine. It is a joint venture between UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, with the administrative operations located on the Berkeley campus. This position is located at the UC Berkeley campus.

The IGI is presently seeking highly motivated Project Scientists to conduct research towards clinical translation of genetic therapies for inherited disorders of hematopoiesis such as sickle cell disease (SCD) and primary immunodeficiencies (PID). This work will be performed as part of a team effort within the Center for Translational Genomics (CTG) at UC Berkeley. Specific goals will be the evaluation of new genome editing enzymes for SCD/PID therapy, the improvement of existing therapeutic approaches, and the assessment of ex vivo genome editing outcomes in human hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) and/or T cells, evaluation of the impacts of procedures on the edited HSPCs/T cells, and communication with organizations responsible for manufacture or regulation of therapeutics. Our ideal candidates are those with the demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, are efficient and open in collaboration, and those who enjoy engaging with a diverse group of researchers. The ideal candidates will also be innovative and able to synergize various ideas and approaches, while exercising sound judgment to evaluate and take acceptable risks. Occasional travel will be required.

The Project Scientists will also collaborate with IGI investigators at UCB, UCSF, UCLA and other IGI-affiliated universities in the use of genome editing to treat hemoglobinopathies such as SCD and/or primary immunodeficiencies.

Basic Qualifications (at the time of application):
Ph.D. or equivalent international degree

Additional Qualifications (by start date):
The candidates must have a minimum of 2 years of post-doctoral and/or industry experience

Preferred Qualifications:
•Degree in related field such as Molecular Genetics, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, or related discipline
•Experience with genetic manipulation of mammalian cells.
•Experience with the development and improvement of genome editing tools.
•Experience with the development of genetic and/or cell-based therapies.
•Experience with GMP manufacture of therapeutics.
•Experience interacting with the FDA (e.g., IND submission).
•Experience with ex vivo delivery of genome editing reagents.
•Experience with preclinical transplantation models (e.g., humanized mice).
•Experience culturing primary cells of the hematopoietic system.
• Experience culturing HSPCs, including assessment of hematopoiesis (e.g. CFU assays).
