The Blum Center for Developing Economies at the University of California, Berkeley is generating an applicant pool of qualified temporary instructors and invites applications for a lecturer position to teach courses in the area of Development Engineering. Information regarding existing Development Engineering (Dev Eng) courses is available at http://guide.berkeley.edu/courses/dev_eng/. New classes in Dev Eng are planned based upon student interest and candidate expertise. Candidates under consideration will be contacted by the Blum Center. Selected candidates will hold the title of Lecturer. The previous pool closed September 3, 2020 . Those interested in remaining in the pool must reapply.
We plan to hire for the Spring 2021 semester, Fall 2021 semester, Spring 2022 semester, and the Summer Sessions 2021 and 2022, should an opening arise. The pool is being generated in case of need and will remain open through February 1, 2022, to accommodate upcoming course needs and new applicants. The review of applications for Fall semester appointments will be in May, for Spring semester appointments in October, and for Summer Sessions appointments in March.

General Duties: Lecturers are responsible for the course syllabus: curriculum development and delivery, student mentoring, student assessment through relevant projects, problem sets, tests and/or class attendance and participation, and grades. Project-based courses will require working with potential sponsors.
Minimum/Basic Qualifications Required: Bachelor’s or equivalent international degree at time of application is required.
Additional Qualifications: The following additional qualifications are required by the start date of the job. Applicants must hold either a master’s degree or equivalent international degree, or at least 7 years of industry or nonprofit organization experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent international degree or graduate professional degree is preferred in a discipline associated with development engineering (e.g ., development technologies, development economics and business models, impact analysis, design for development). Teaching experience in two or more of the topic areas listed below is preferred. Also desirable are a strong track record in developing and implementing new and experimental methods of delivering education and hands-on learning, and experience working with students from a range of disciplines. Industry leadership experience. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.A.

Salary range: Starting salary is commensurate with highest degree, teaching experience, and equity within the Department.
Positions are typically part-time. Instructors teaching one 3-5 unit course during summer sessions will normally be appointed at 11% time. Instructors teaching one course with three hours of lecture per week during the semester will normally be appointed at 33% time. Alternatively, depending on curricular needs, lecturers may be hired into the Teacher Special Program (TSP) title, and will teach short courses consisting of 10 -15 hours, and are paid at an hourly rate.
The exact percentage of lecturer appointments will vary, depending on the number of sections taught, and duration of the course.
Duration: Lecturers hired to teach during the Fall semester are employed from August through December. Lecturers hired to teach during the Spring semester are employed from January through May. Lecturers hired to teach during Summer Sessions are employed between May and August. Courses will generally span a whole term but may be shorter appointments (e.g ., module within a course or a half-semester course).
