The Department of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley is recruiting a pool of qualified temporary lecturers to teach core and upper-division undergraduate courses in Economics. Positions may be available as early as spring 2021 to fill ongoing needs. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending upon the needs of the Department. Applicants will also be considered for open positions in Summer Sessions. Positions may range from 17% –100% (one – six courses).
Due to COVID 19 UC Berkeley will begin the fall semester with fully remote instruction. UC Berkeley is prepared to implement hybrid and/or flexible modes of instruction as soon as public health conditions allow. Remote instruction requires an online course to be designed from the outset for delivery via distance-learning methods. Instructors must have internet access and be prepared to adjust pedagogical approaches with a remote setting and use new teaching tools. Department policy requires instructors to create and maintain a bcourses site.
The Department of Economics is seeking outstanding instructors to be appointed in the Non-Senate Lecturer title series who can teach small and large courses (300 or more students) in, but not limited to, the subject areas listed below:
Introduction to Economics (one semester combination of Principles of Micro and Macro)
Economic Analysis – Micro (Theory)
Economic Analysis – Macro (Theory)
Economic Statistics and Econometrics
Upper-Division Courses (particularly within the following areas):
Global Inequality & Growth
International Monetary Economics
Psychology and Economics
In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include (but are not limited to) managing graders and/or graduate student instructors (teaching assistants), holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and maintaining a course website. Those teaching large courses are expected to work with, meet with, and mentor graduate student instructors.
Basic qualifications (required at the time of application):
PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program
Additional (required by the start date of the position):
Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree)
A Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) in Economics or a related discipline, is preferred. Demonstrated experience with courses in Economics, and a track record of excellence in teaching to a diverse undergraduate student body.
The starting rate for Lecturers in Economics is at least, but not less than, $12,000 per course. Salary for all positions will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications.
