Position description

The Program in Celtic Studies at UC Berkeley welcomes applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach undergraduate courses, should a need arise, in any of the following possible areas:

• Celtic Languages (Modern Irish, Medieval and/or Modern Welsh, Breton, Old & Middle Irish)
• Reading and Composition (in English on the works of Celtic writers)
• Celtic History/Culture, Including Medieval and/or Modern Mythology, Oral Tradition, Romanticism, Modern Celtic popular cultures, Celtic Christianity, and/or Folklore
• Celtic Literature (in original languages and in translation) including Irish Literature, Medieval Welsh and Arthurian Literature
• Celtic Linguistics
• Other topics in Celtic Studies

The number of positions hired from this pool will vary from semester to semester, subject to the needs and budget of the Program, and is often zero. This application pool does not guarantee that an open position exists. If an instructor is hired, the position will most likely be part-time, starting as low as 33% of full-time employment, depending on instructional workload.

When a need arises for a Fall semester, we typically review applications in March, April or May; for a Spring or Summer semester, our review of applications is typically in October or November. This may vary based on timing of any unexpected teaching vacancies, budget changes, or other factors.

Due to COVID 19 UC Berkeley will begin the fall semester with fully remote instruction. UC Berkeley is prepared to implement hybrid and/or flexible modes of instruction as soon as public health conditions allow. Remote instruction may be synchronous, asynchronous, or a combination of both. Instructors must have internet access and be prepared to adjust pedagogical approaches with a remote setting and use new teaching tools.

Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester (in mid-January for Spring Semester; in mid-August for Fall Semester), and appointments may be renewable based on the Program’s need, funding, and on lecturer performance.

General Duties: In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), interacting with students outside of class time via email and/or bCourses.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (required at time of application):

  • A completed Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent international degree).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Fluency in the English language.
  • If being hired for a language course, fluency in the language being taught.
  • A completed Master’s degree (or equivalent international degree) is strongly preferred, especially for teaching any non-language courses.
  • For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment). The Program is unable to provide a visa/work permit.
  • Demonstrated expertise of literature and culture of the area being taught.
  • Advanced degree(s) may be preferred, depending on course being taught.
  • Experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level in the U.S.
  • Potential for successful attraction, advising and mentoring students.
  • If hired to teach language course, professional training in language teaching.
  • If hired to teach R&C, demonstrated experience teaching reading and writing in English, and familiarity with UC Berkeley Reading & Composition requirements.

Salary: Commensurate with college teaching experience, in accordance with the current Unit-18 lecturer salary scale and its provisions. (The starting 100% full-time annual gross salary rate is currently $56,381.)
