Position description

The Xu 's lab in the California of Institute for Quantitative Biosciences at UC Berkeley develops new microscopy tools for cell biology and nanomaterials. The Assistant Project Scientist will carry out research on the use of optical microscopy to study the in situ reaction dynamics of two-dimensional materials in electrochemistry settings (built on Nano Lett. 20, 534), as well as the integration of such systems with cell and membrane systems (built on Nano Lett. 16, 5022 and ACS Nano 14, 5609).

Responsibilities:

The Assistant Project Scientist will work as a part of the team on projects related to the development and application of advanced optical microscopy methods to study the in situ electrochemical behavior of two-dimensional materials, and the integration of such systems with biological systems. The candidate will be responsible for the experiments, data analysis, and manuscript preparation in collaboration with Dr. Xu and Dr. Groves, and will work closely with a graduate student and potentially with undergraduate apprentices.

Minimum/Basic Qualifications required at the time of application:

Ph.D. or equivalent international degree.

Additional Qualifications must be met by the start of the job:

• Two years of research on optical microscopy, electrochemistry, and two-dimensional materials.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with the culturing and handling of mammalian cells.

• Experience with the preparation of supported lipid bilayers.
• Experience with micro/nano-fabrications and nanomaterials/surface characterization.
• Experience with coding and image processing using MATLAB.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a small team.
• Demonstrated creativity and resourcefulness, ability to lead a discovery-orientated project semi-independently, and careful attention to details.
