Associate Project Scientist - Berkeley Water Center/RiverLab of the College of Environmental Design

The Berkeley Water Center/RiverLab of the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley invites applicants for a Project Scientist research position to work with Professor G. Mathias Kondolf.

Professor Kondolf's research group works on river processes, infrastructure sustainability, water-energy tradeoffs, flood risk management, and river restoration.
The conversion of salt ponds along the margins of the San Francisco Estuary has been extremely active in recent years, providing a range of experiences that may offer lessons to inform planning of salt ponds transformations in China. This study will draw upon lessons learned in the San Francisco context that may be relevant to transformation of wetlands in Coastal Shandong Province.

Duties of Position Includes:

The duties of the position are to compile information from experiences to date converting salt ponds to wildlife habitat and to agriculture (in San Francisco Bay and Shandong Peninsula, respectively), through analysis of documents, remotely-sensed data, relevant hydrologic and ecological data sets, interviews, and field work in Coastal Shandong Province and the San Francisco Bay Region, to identify key factors affecting the success of salt ponds conversions. Based on this analysis and the data set developed from the two regions, develop multi-objective optimization models for salt ponds revitalization.

Basic qualifications:
PhD degree or equivalent international degree at time of application.

Additional qualifications (by start date):
Minimum five years of relevant research experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Urban/regional/rural planning, or closely related field. Fluency in written and spoken Chinese. Relevant project experience in planning, coastal restoration, or related topics. Experience conducting research in Chinese and North American contexts, experience in wetland planning.

Salary
Starting salary will be commensurate with experience.

Appointment and Salary Details:
This is a 80% time, one-year position and the appointment may be renewable on an ongoing annual basis depending on availability of funding and satisfactory performance. Anticipated start date is February 2020.
