The University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) seeks a dynamic and distinguished executive to serve as the next Executive Director of the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI). The IGI is a partnership among three highly respected research institutions: UC Berkeley, University of California San Francisco (UCSF), and Gladstone Institutes. Its primary mission is to accelerate genome discovery and translation of resulting technologies in order to ethically and equitably improve human health and agriculture sustainability. The Executive Director (ED), our highest level administrative officer, will help the IGI realize its vast potential and meet its mission. Through efforts on both the UCB and UCSF campuses, the ED will be responsible for creating and sustaining an organizational structure and culture that supports our mission driven goals, as well as ensuring the financial health of the institute. This is a full time position.
The executive director serves as the chief administrative officer of the institute, leading the IGI team toward targeted, integrated institutional goals; working closely with scientific directors to build and execute scientific strategy; managing the administrative team; engaging the three IGI institutional partners; leading the IGI's organizational development; and engaging with external constituents, including high-level donors, volunteers, and investors. Working with the IGI's stakeholders, the executive director will be expected to:
-Serve as administrative head of the IGI and primary liaison between the IGI, the Governing Board and Scientific Advisory Board,
-Lead the staff and scientific directors in developing, implementing and managing IGI programs and operations. Ensure integration and alignment of projects and activities across the various program areas of the IGI.
-Foster innovative, interdisciplinary research collaborations, assessing needs and establishing necessary research capability and capacity. Support IGI investigators in developing research strategy, identifying new ventures, and resources. Identify and collaborate with scientific and industry partners.
-Oversee financial stewardship for the IGI, including partnering closely with the Senior Director of Development to support and advance philanthropic fundraising efforts of the IGI and pursuing opportunities for additional funding from agencies, industry and other channels.
-Work with IGI team members to foster healthy cultural norms that ensure a team-oriented approach and strong morale within the institute.
-Manage a team of staff directors in operations, finance, communications and program management, providing high level directives and oversight to ensure the mission of the IGI is met.
-Partner with dotted-line directors in Intellectual Property and Donor Relations to cultivate and manage new relationships, collaborations and other activities with industry partners, IGI and non-IGI academic groups and research centers in the US and abroad.
-Oversee institute-wide policies and procedures to ensure IGI researchers are in compliance with contract obligations relating to IP and donor agreements.
-Ensure integration and alignment of scientific endeavors across the IGI, as well as with programmatic activities and communications.
-Represent the IGI on committees and participate in activities at the campus, national and international levels.
-Serve as a public point person for IGI. Contribute substantially to efforts to elevate the recognition of the IGI among the scientific community, as well as the general public, and ensure the IGI is viewed as the leader in the genome engineering space.
-Support the development and management of programs in the areas of education, outreach and entrepreneurship. Give presentations to the broader scientific community, government officials and media to promote the mission of IGI.
An advanced degree is required at the time of application.
Five or more years of experience leading in a scientific or research-oriented organization (e.g. institute, initiative, multi-laboratory collaboration, academic department, biotechnology or bioengineering company).
-A Ph.D or equivalent international degree and/or MBA, MPA or JD
-Demonstrated success leading in a scientific environment, a history of developing and managing biotechnology initiatives, and experience working in a dynamic and growing organization
-Strong project management and collaborative leadership skills; the ability to move projects with diverse stakeholders to timely completion while maintaining an understanding of long-term goals
-A proven record of advancing diversity, equity and inclusion within an organization
-Excellent personnel management ability and the ability to lead and motivate cross-functional teams including administrative and scientific staff
-Ability to articulate an organization’s story in a compelling way to internal and external constituents
-Prior experience with operations, finance and/or program development
