Academic - Temporary, Part-Time, Non-Tenure Track
UC Berkeley Extension, the professional and continuing education division at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a pool of qualified, temporary, part-time instructors to teach undergraduate students for the Fall Program for Freshmen (https://fpf.berkeley.edu/).
The Fall Program for Freshmen (FPF) is a small, collaborative learning community for freshmen students in their first semester at UC Berkeley’s College of Letters & Sciences (L&S). We seek dynamic instructors with a commitment to undergraduate education to teach a wide range of courses that fulfill L&S degree requirements, including major prerequisites, college writing requirements, breadth requirements, and some electives. Courses are offered on-site in Berkeley, CA every fall term. Most courses are offered during the weekdays.
The pool will remain in place through August 31, 2020; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond August 31, 2020 must reapply. Screening of applicants begins immediately and will continue as needed; all appointments begin in the Fall 2020 semester. This instructor application pool does not guarantee that an open position exists. The number of these temporary, part-time, non-tenure track, academic positions varies each fall, depending on the needs of the program. Appointments are offered on a course-by-course basis, and appointment length is based upon course section schedule(s). Appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.
Benefits Summary: workers compensation and general liability insurance coverage, Medicare contributions, mandatory Safe Harbor Defined Contribution Plan contributions (in lieu of Social Security), and voluntary 403b plan.

Instructor duties include but are not limited to:
In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include: completing mandatory training programs by deadlines established by UC Berkeley, preparing and delivering course materials (e.g., syllabus), designing learning assessments, assigning grades, holding office hours, advising students, and interacting with students outside of class time via email and campus web-based course resources.
The ideal candidate will also stay current within their subject, discipline or field of practice and use subject-matter expertise and leverage additional resources appropriately to enhance the curriculum. All of our instructors employ culturally competent and inclusive teaching methodologies in the classroom (including teaching non-native speakers and/or students with academic letters of accommodations for learning disabilities).
Basic Qualifications (at time of application):
Advanced degree required.
Additional Qualifications (by the start date of the position):
For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The department is unable to provide a visa/work permit.
- Doctorate degree or equivalent international degree.
- Experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching the course subject at the undergraduate level within the U.S.
- Experience in course development, including creating original academic content such as syllabi, learning objectives, lectures/presentations/scripts, learning activities, assignments, assessments, exams, and quizzes.
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues and work within a team environment.
- Proficiency in (or willingness to learn) instructional and other technology such as the campus’ Learning Management System (Canvas) and Google tools (docs, sheets, slides, shared calendars, email, etc.).
