Description

The Yosef Lab in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Department at University of California, Berkeley welcomes applications for an Assistant/Associate Specialist. It's a very exciting time to be building machine learning methodology for biological data. The Yosef Lab has been developing Bayesian models and scalable inference implemented in open-source software. We are looking for candidates to help us investigate and build the next-generation statistical and software tools for biological data analysis. The candidate will perform work under the supervision of Professor Nir Yosef.

Appointment length:
This is a full-time, one-year position and the appointment may be renewable on an ongoing annual basis depending on availability of funding and satisfactory performance. Anticipated start date is Fall 2019.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate’s main duties and responsibilities will include the following: (i) contribute to research on new statistical estimators for detection of defferentially expressed genes (or spatially differentially expressed); (ii) contribute to the development of a new simulation pipeline for adding rigorous statistical unit tests and ensure stability
and consistency for the codebase; (iii) contribute to workflow research manuscripts to demonstrate the usability of our tools and highlight the aforementioned new features.

Basic Qualifications (at the time of application):
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent international degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Master's degree plus three additional years experience or Bachelor's degree plus five additional years experience
  2. Degree in Computer Sciences, Mathematics, Applied mathematics, Statistics or related technical field
  3. Experience in developing or applying predictive analytics, statistical modeling, data mining, or machine learning algorithms, especially deep learning.
  4. Experience with biological data (e.g., RNA-sequencing)
  5. Problem solving and data analysis skills
  6. Demonstrated effective communication skills, both verbal and written
  7. Software design and development skills/experience

Salary:
The full-time annual salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
