Position: Research Fellow - UC Berkeley Center for Consumer Law & Economic Justice
Location: Berkeley, CA
Salary: $86,000 - $100,000 (commensurate with experience)
Anticipated Start Date: Late 2019
This is a full-time, two-year term position, with the possibility of renewal.

The Center for Consumer Law & Economic Justice at Berkeley Law is seeking to hire its first Research Fellow. The Fellow will spearhead the Center’s work advancing consumer rights and economic justice. That work will include participating as amicus curiae in federal and state courts and as commenter in rulemaking proceedings in California and throughout the nation. The Fellow will also launch and direct the Center’s new Published Justice Project, aimed at ensuring that important court decisions see the light of day.
The Center for Consumer Law & Economic Justice seeks to establish fair and equal access to a marketplace free from fraud and predation. Through research, advocacy, policy, and teaching, the Center acts to create a society where economic security and opportunity are available to all.
The Fellow will help to implement the Center’s advocacy efforts in appellate courts and regulatory agencies, collaborating and advising on appellate matters in the U.S. courts of appeals and Supreme Court, as well as state intermediate and high courts. The Fellow will also direct the Published Justice Project, a new initiative to identify important decisions in the areas of consumer law and economic justice and to bring greater attention to those cases in scholarly/professional circles as well as the general public. Additionally, in conjunction with Center personnel, the fellow will support the Center’s research goals by contributing to policy papers on an array of consumer protection and economic justice issues. Finally, the Fellow will be involved with the full range of the Center’s other activities, from arranging conferences to delivering presentations and testimony to spurring the development of consumer law programs at law schools across the country.
• Conducting research in the area of consumer law and economic justice, under the direction of and in coordination with Berkeley Law faculty, staff, and students.
• Drafting and coordinating amicus briefs for filing in federal and state appellate courts in California and around the United States.
• Reviewing unpublished California Court of Appeal opinions that bear on consumer and economic justice issues, and offering input to the courts as to which should be published.
• Writing and submitting regulatory comments in rulemaking proceedings before federal and state agencies.
• Developing and distributing Center communications in newsletters, social media posts, and other channels.
• Developing policy ideas, drafting policy papers, and presenting work at gatherings of academics, practitioners, and policymakers held at Berkeley Law and elsewhere.
Minimum Qualifications (required at time of application):
• J.D. or other advanced degree.
• Background in consumer law and/or economic justice.
• 3-5 years professional experience in a government, legal services, nonprofit or law firm position involving rigorous legal/policy research; appellate/amicus experience preferred.
• Very strong written and oral communication skills.
• Energetic and entrepreneurial approach to helping build a new and developing institution.
• Ability to work independently as well as in close collaboration with staff, faculty, and students.
