Position description

The Theoretical Astrophysics Center (TAC) at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for the TAC Postdoctoral Fellowship, and additional Postdoctoral Scholars, starting in the summer or fall of 2020. These are full time positions. The incumbents are expected to carry out independent research on topics of their choosing in theoretical astrophysics, cosmology or planetary science.

In addition to being considered for the TAC Fellowship, applicants will also be considered for grant-supported postdoctoral positions with TAC members, and postdoctoral positions in stellar and time-domain astrophysics joint between Berkeley, Caltech, and KITP. Current senior members of the TAC include Jon Arons, Eugene Chiang, Joanne Cohn, Wick Haxton, Daniel Kasen, Richard Klein, Chung-Pei Ma, Philip Marcus, Christopher McKee, Burkhard Militzer, Eliot Quataert, Uros Seljak, and Martin White. Successful candidates will also have the opportunity to interact with the broad spectrum of researchers in the Berkeley Astronomy Department and with other experimental and theoretical programs in the neighboring Physics Department, Space Sciences Laboratory, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Basic/Minimum Qualification (at the time of application): PhD or equivalent international degree or enrolled in PHD or equivalent international degree program.

Additional qualifications (required by start date): A PhD or equivalent international degree. No more than 3 years of previous postdoctoral experience (Candidates who will have more than 3 years of previous postdoctoral experience by their start date in 2020 should apply for the Assistant Project Scientist position).

Preferred qualifications: Previous theoretical research, degree and a track record of published lead- author papers in any of the following fields: theoretical astrophysics, cosmology, planetary science, exoplanets, plasma physics, star and/or galaxy formation, compact objects, stars and supernovae.

Salary: Salary will be commensurate with experience.
