Position description

The Department of Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Specialist in The Social Origins Lab, directed by Professor Jan Engelmann. Research in the lab addresses how social and cognitive abilities arise and interact with one another in human development and across species and cultures.
The assistant specialist will be expected to work collaboratively with a research team to design and create experimental stimuli. The candidate will also be assisting with data analyses and the preparation of research for publication. In addition, the assistant specialist will play a lead role in the recruitment of young research participants. Furthermore, they will be responsible for insuring the proper operation and maintenance of the laboratory such as purchase, receive, store, and distribute supplies for lab projects; maintain inventory records.

Responsibilities:
• Will be responsible for recruiting and scheduling participants and preparing applications for human subjects approval
• Will be designing and creating experimental stimuli
• Will be assisting with data analysis and the preparation of research for publication
• Will be responsible for training undergraduate assistants, maintaining participant records and purchasing equipment
• Will be responsible for testing young children and coordinating with local daycare centers and museums

Minimum/Basic Qualifications Required:
• Master’s degree or equivalent international degree at the time of application

Preferred Qualifications:
• Candidates should have a strong interest on social and cognitive development, as well as in cross-cultural and comparative Psychology.
• At least 2 years of coursework in experimental psychology, cognitive psychology, or linguistics
• Experience working with human subjects, especially children, in an academic research environment
• Excellent oral and written communication skills to address issues
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize work with demanding time-frames
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperation working with relationships with a multi-diverse campus
• Basic computer programming language skills in MATLAB, web design and video editing
• Previous experience with statistical software (e.g. SPSS, JMP, R)

Appointment: The initial appointment will be made at 100% time for 1 year with a start date of September 15, 2019. Thereafter, 1 year annual appointments renewable based on satisfactory performance and availability of extramural funding and support.
