Position description

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley is generating a new applicant pool of qualified temporary instructors and invites applications for a lecturer position to teach courses in our department in the areas of Energy, Civil Infrastructure and Climate; Engineering and Project Management; Environmental Engineering; GeoSystems Engineering; Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Materials; Systems (Civil Systems); and Transportation Engineering. The previous pool closed January 2019. Those interested in remaining in the pool must reapply.

This pool is being generated in case of need to accommodate upcoming course needs and new applicants and will remain open through March 16, 2020. We plan to hire for Summer Sessions 2019, for the Fall 2019 semester, and for the Spring 2020 semester, if the need arises. The review of applications for summer sessions will be in March, for fall semester appointments in May, and for spring semester appointments in October. General Duties:
In addition to classroom/laboratory teaching and preparation, general duties may include (but are not limited to) managing and mentoring graders and/or graduate student instructors (teaching assistants), holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and maintaining course website.

Minimum/Basic qualifications required: Bachelor’s or equivalent international degree is required at time of application.

Additional qualifications: The following additional qualifications are required by the start of the job. Advanced degree or five years of teaching and/or industry experience.

Preferred qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent international degree in an engineering discipline (or related field), experience in the field of Civil and Environmental Engineering and prior teaching experience is preferred. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.A.

Starting salary will be commensurate with highest degree, past college-level teaching experience, relevant industry experience and equity within the department. The minimum annual full-time rate is currently $61,930.

Positions are typically part-time. Instructors teaching one 3-5 unit course during summer sessions will normally be appointed at 11% time. Instructors teaching one course with three hours of lecture per week during the semester will normally be appointed at 33% time; exact percentages depend on contact hours and other assigned duties. Lecturers hired to teach during summer sessions are employed between May and August. Lecturers hired to teach during the fall semester are employed from August through December. Lecturers hired to teach during the spring semester are employed from January through May.
