The American Studies program at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach courses in American Studies beginning with openings in 2019-20. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the department. Positions may range from 33% to 100%.
Applicants should be prepared to teach courses in the following areas:
- The upper-division senior thesis seminar, in which instructors advise students on how to design and execute a substantial integrative research project drawn from their preparatory work in American Studies; and
- Courses in the American Studies methods/theory series, “Examining U.S. Cultures in Time” and “Examining U.S. Cultures in Place.”
Teaching an American Studies course includes holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials, and maintaining a course website.
Basic qualifications (required at time of application): Completion of all Ph.D. degree requirements (or equivalent international degree program) except the dissertation.
Additional qualifications (required at start date): Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree); experience teaching college students and working with college students on intensive, individualized research and writing projects.
Preferred qualifications: Ph.D. and college teaching experience in American Studies, African American Studies, Art History, English, Ethnic Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, Geography, and/or History; ability to contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education.
Salary is dependent on college-level teaching experience (not including graduate student or summer session teaching). Minimum annual full-time salary rate of $54,738.
