Assistant Project Scientist - Department of Physics - University of California, Berkeley.
The Department of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Project Scientist in the area of theoretical and computational nanoporous materials. The expected start date is March 2019.
This is a full-time, 100% appointment.
As part of the Neaton Research Group in the Physics Department at UC Berkeley, the Assistant Project Scientist will use advanced van der Waals-corrected density functional theory (DFT) calculations, many-body perturbation theory, molecular dynamics, and calculations of chemical shifts relevant to NMR measurements to investigate novel mechanisms of CO2 adsorption in amine-appended metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) in close collaboration with experimental groups.
The Assistant Project Scientist will develop new predictive theoretical methods and understanding of promising candidate MOFs for CO2 and other gaseous molecule capture, including an understanding of key structural features and kinetics. Based on this research, the incumbent will seek new MOFs for optimal CO2 binding with state-of-the-art DFT calculations and, in close collaboration with experiment, work to realize exceptional adsorbent materials for selective CO2 capture.
Responsibilities will also include the development of new capabilities such as new understanding, new electronic structure methods, and new web-based software relevant for understanding and predicting CO2 capture in complex amine-appended nanoporous materials. Additionally, the candidate will take a senior leadership role in the Neaton research group, and work with junior members to facilitate continue productive interactions in related fields with
UC Berkeley and LBNL staff.
Basic qualifications: (Required at the time of application)
Advanced degree at the time of application.
Additional qualifications: (Required by start date)
A PhD (or equivalent international degree) required by start date of the job.
Relevant fields/disciplines: Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or Electrical Engineering. Research in theoretical and computational chemistry with an emphasis on fundamental and applied aspects of diamine-appended metal–organic frameworks. Experience in developing strong working relationships and collaborating with diverse team members.
Salary and Benefits:
