Position description

Description:
The Shapira lab is looking to hire a talented postdoctoral candidate to take part in an NIH-funded project employing C. elegans to study the role of genetic factors in shaping gut microbiota structure and function. Research in the Shapira lab seeks to understand the fundamentals of host-microbe interactions in the context of the whole organism. Research focuses on the shaping the gut microbiota, employing microcosm experiments, synthetic communities, NGS, and functional analyses. Additional efforts are aimed at understanding how gut commensals affect host immunity and host-pathogen interactions. The level of investigation in the Shapira lab spans the range between molecular mechanisms, ecological constraints and impact on evolution. To achieve all this, we are using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, a powerful model organism for genetic studies, as a host model. Current research includes three major directions: a) Shaping the structure and function of the Gut microbiota; b) Regulatory mechanisms of innate immune responses; and c) the role of antagonistic pleiotropy in aging.

Responsibilities:
Carrying on research, preferably while mentoring undergraduate students, sharing results through lab meetings and discussions with the PI, and summarizing results in the form of scientific papers. In addition, postdocs are expected to take part, as all other lab members, in a limited range of standard lab chores.

Minimum/Basic Qualifications required at the time of application:

• Ph.D. or equivalent international degree

Required Qualifications by start date:

• Lab bench experience

Preferred Qualifications by start date:

• Relevant experience in regards to C. elegans biology, genomics, computational analysis and knowledge of R.

Appointment: This position will be reporting to Professor Shapira at the Shapira Lab at UC Berkeley. The initial appointment is 100% for one (1) year with the expectation of extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding. The anticipated start date of this position will be as early as February 2019.
