At the forefront of environmental design education since its founding in 1959, UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design (CED) was the first to combine architecture, planning, and landscape architecture into a single college. Integrating departments of Architecture, City and Regional Planning, and Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning, alongside several professional programs and certifications, the College provides leadership to address the world’s most pressing urban challenges. The College of Environmental Design boasts a renowned faculty, an extraordinarily talented and diverse student body, and distinguished alumni and staff that are committed to a heritage of design and planning, activism, and innovation. Working in collaboration with the CED community, the new Dean will continue to build upon this rich legacy, by advancing academic excellence, greater fiscal sustainability, and equity and access for all.
The new Dean will join UC Berkeley at a moment of great opportunity. Chancellor Carol Christ and Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Paul Alivisatos recently led the campus through a strategic planning process, resulting in a plan that invests heavily in the student experience, makes new commitments within Berkeley’s research and academic spheres, and endeavors to make the institution a more welcoming and supportive place for people of all backgrounds. To support these initiatives, the campus is implementing a new financial model and will launch an upcoming campus-wide fundraising campaign. With focus on rigorous research, scholarship, design excellence, and the intersections between the College’s work and the university’s strategic priorities of environmental change, sustainability, and justice, the College of Environmental Design is poised to be a campus leader in this exciting next era for the University.
The College of Environmental Design’s education is distinguished by its interactive, intensive studio experience, involving deep immersion in theory, technology, and real time practice for undergraduate and graduate students. These elements are supplemented by lecture and seminar classes which integrate the teaching of fundamental principles and analysis tools with applications in design and planning. The College’s faculty comprise 55 full-time and 50 part-time teaching and research faculty. CED enrolls over 1,000 students in 4 undergraduate majors, 8 undergraduate minors, 8 professional degrees, and 4 academic graduate degrees in fields of architecture, city planning, landscape architecture, urban design, and real estate development and design. The College employs 66 staff in various full-time, part-time, and limited appointments with responsibilities spanning across IT and facilities, summer programs, and development and alumni relations. CED’s undergraduate student body is the most diverse of all the colleges at UC Berkeley with 41% of new students identified as first generation college students, 41% of domestic students as Pell Grant recipients, 29% identifying as immigrants, and 45% indicating English is not their primary language.
The next Dean will lead the College into a new era of excellence by advancing departmental strengths in design and research. The Dean will also lead efforts to strategically prioritize CED’s departmental and college-wide initiatives and connect them to the campus’s broader strategic goals.
The Dean will strengthen operational infrastructure, ensure the College has the necessary resources to fund their cutting-edge aspirations, and creatively steward existing resources while developing and nurturing new revenue streams. Celebrating the rich diversity of the College, the Dean will promote an equitable and inclusive learning environment that invests in critical support for students, faculty, and staff, and builds a strong sense of belonging and community for all. The Dean will serve as a visible and vocal spokesperson and advocate for the College, its cross-disciplinary approach, and its core principles of social, economic and environmental justice, and design excellence.
The Dean will embody forward thinking and transparent leadership, demonstrating a deep respect for shared governance and the variety of disciplines represented in the College. The dean will be a champion of the university’s and college’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, and have a track record of implementing strategies that attract and support students, faculty and staff from underrepresented backgrounds. Furthermore, the next dean will be a community builder with proven experience creating and leading cohesive, collaborative, and synergistic communities.
