The Department of French at the University of California, Berkeley seeks a pool of qualified candidates for possible consideration as temporary instructors to teach beginning to advanced level in the area of French language and culture. Screening of applicants begins immediately and will continue as needed. Applicants will be selected from this pool for one calendar year; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond March 24, 2020 must reapply. Positions will be part-time, renewable, non-tenure track.
Typically, the Department reviews applications for fall teaching in April and May, and applications for spring teaching in October and November and for the summer in April (if applicable). The number of positions varies from semester to semester, and appointments may be renewable based on need, funding and performance.
Responsibilities include teaching lower division beginning to advanced level French courses, curriculum development; and collaborating with other language faculty. In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students and preparing course materials.
Basic Qualifications (at time of application):
Advanced degree or enrolled in an advanced degree program.
Additional Qualifications (by start date):
Advanced degree. College-level teaching for at least three years by start date.
For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The department is unable to provide a visa/work permit.
PhD (or equivalent international degree) and relevant college-level teaching experience in French, Second Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics, or a relevant field; native or near-native ability in French and English by the time of application.
Demonstrated excellence in college-level teaching for at least three years by start date.

Salary commensurate with education and teaching experience. Starting minimum full-time equivalent annual academic salary is $54,738.00.
