The Department of Film & Media at UC Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach an undergraduate-level studio course in creative Documentary and Non-fiction Film Production that focuses on practices and techniques of non-fiction digital filmmaking. Coursework consists of a series of short image and sound exercises and then a final film project of the student’s design. The class examines important techniques of non-fiction film, such as research and writing for non-fiction, the observational camera, filming in public, the interview, voiceover, working with archival film and other documents, as well as editing techniques—working to find form and structure for non-fiction materials. At the same time, the course explores the different modes of the documentary and the thorny theoretical and ethical issues that arise in non-fiction production.
The course opening is available for Spring Semester 2019, but the pool will remain open until September 1, 2019 in order to accommodate other possible upcoming course needs in this area. Applications for Spring 2019 will be reviewed in late October, 2018. The position is designed as part time, for one course only, which for Lecturers amounts to 17% of full-time employment. The semester begins in mid-January and ends in May 2019. When a need arises for a Fall semester, we typically review applications in March; for a Summer term, our review of applications is typically in November.
General Duties: In addition to teaching responsibilities and demonstration of production technologies, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and interacting with students outside of class time via email and campus web-based course resources.
Minimal Qualification (required at the time of application):
• Completed MA/MFA (or equivalent international degree) in Film and/or Media (or a Humanities field)
Additional Qualifications (required by the employment start date):
• For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The department is unable to provide a visa/work permit.
• Experience in teaching non-fiction digital filmmaking at the college level in the U.S.
Salary: Commensurate with college teaching experience, in accordance with the current Unit-18 lecturer salary scale and its provisions. (The starting 100% full-time annual gross salary rate is currently $54,738)
