The University of California, Berkeley, invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Public Health.

The Berkeley School of Public Health is fueled by a deep commitment to social and environmental justice, scientific inquiry and discovery, and community-engaged public health action. A world-renowned institution widely regarded as the birthplace of social epidemiology, the School’s research focuses on the interaction of biological, behavioral, and environmental determinants of human health.

The School has a 75-year legacy of leadership in community-engaged science and shaping policy, education, and services around the globe. By harnessing the diverse, interdisciplinary strengths across the UC Berkeley campus and channeling Berkeley’s institutional ethos — challenging convention to shape the future — the School of Public Health stands in tireless pursuit of innovative approaches to addressing the most pressing threats to a healthy society, particularly among our vulnerable populations, locally and globally.

The School improves population health by preparing the next generation of public health scholars, practitioners, and leaders through exceptional scholarship and transformational research that shed new light on public health challenges both old and new; through preeminent and innovative educational programs; and by translating new discoveries into practice and partnerships to address the critical health needs and inequities in our diverse communities. The School embraces diversity in its education, research, and service mission as the best strategy for successfully engaging and transforming those communities.

In 2018, Chancellor Carol Christ initiated a new university-wide strategic planning process. With the campus launching major new transdisciplinary strategic initiatives as a result — in areas such as environmental change, sustainability and justice; inequality and opportunity; and health and wellbeing — the School of Public Health stands to play a pivotal role in charting the path forward for the nation’s most celebrated public institution of higher education.
The Berkeley School of Public Health’s impact and promise are built upon a tradition of excellence championed by renowned faculty and alumni who are trailblazers not only in research and scholarship but in transforming how we think about public health itself. The faculty comprise over 200 investigators, including 43 ladder-rank faculty and 20 additional full-time faculty; they include six National Academy of Medicine members, eight American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellows, three Fulbright Fellows, two National Academy of Sciences members and one MacArthur Fellow.

Each year more than 1,200 diverse undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students are trained to develop transdisciplinary solutions to improve population health, especially for the most vulnerable. The School is the top-ranked undergraduate program and ninth-ranked graduate public health program, and out of only four PhD granting disciplines evaluated in the most recent National Research Council report, it ranked first in Epidemiology, second in Health Services and Policy Analysis, and fourth in Environmental Health Sciences.

In 2018-19, the School has enrolled 816 graduate students and 359 undergraduates across 28 undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Environmental Health Sciences, Global Health & Environment, Health Policy & Management, Health & Social Behavior, Infectious Diseases & Vaccinology, Maternal & Child Health and Public Health Nutrition, and in interdisciplinary areas such as Aging, Global Health and Multicultural Health. The School offers programs both on-campus and online.

Several programs are offered concurrently with other Berkeley schools such as the Haas School of Business, Goldman School of Public Policy, School of Social Welfare, School of Journalism and College of Environmental Design, Department of City and Regional Planning, as well as the medical schools at UC San Francisco and Stanford.

The ideal Dean candidate will provide vision and strategic and intellectual leadership for the School while fully realizing synergies with and across the UC Berkeley campus to enhance the distinction of the Berkeley School of Public Health. The Dean will enhance and accelerate research, discovery, and critical inquiry across the School while providing adept operational oversight of a professional school in a complex institutional environment, one that is grounded in shared governance and a deep commitment to undergraduate and graduate education.

The Dean will demonstrate sincere and vigorous engagement and leadership in advancing institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion, and prioritize seeking new philanthropic support and establishing strategic partnerships, leveraging Berkeley Public Health’s diversity, excellence, and impact to strengthen the educational and public service missions of the School and UC Berkeley.
