The Department of Music at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach a range of courses in the area of musicology.

These courses include, but not limited to the following:

The courses in the Music 128 sequence. They serve students who are not music majors, although music majors are allowed to register for a more advanced section in certain 128 courses. In recent years the Department has offered Music 128 courses on opera, the music of Beethoven, the American musical, love and love songs in the Middle Ages, the history of jazz, and the deep history of music technology. We are interested in courses on canonical and non-canonical topics; the only constraints are that course topics should have a fairly broad appeal and be based in material that is accessible to students with no background in music theory.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and interacting with students outside of class time via email and/or bCourses. Some courses may require supervision of discussion sections taught by graduate students.

Minimum Basic Qualifications: PhD (or equivalent degree) in Musicology by time of application.

Additional Qualifications: Evidence of effective teaching in the areas of Western music by the start date.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with teaching in a university setting.

Annual, Full-time Salary: $53,402 - $58,945; commensurate with experience. Appointments range from 33% to 100% time.
